WATER 1. International Festival of Films on Art. Official Selection

“WATER 1” has been selected in the Official Selection - Short Films section of the 41st edition of The International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA) and will be presented on Saturday March 18th, from 1 to 3 PM at the McCord Museum in Montreal. The screening will also include “Mantles of Transience” by director Nagaru Miyake.

Founded by René Rozon, The International Festival of Films on Art FIFA is dedicated to the international promotion and distribution of films on art and media arts. For over 4 decades, it has presented an annual event in March, which allows discovery of the latest documentaries on art. With its various activities all through the year, Le FIFA is committed to increasing the knowledge and appreciation of art among the public, promoting the work of artists in the fields of cinema, video and visual arts, and also encouraging the production and diffusion of art films.

WATER 1 explores the connection between matter, reality, life, and the absurdity of human thought. Kandalaft uses sound to deceive our senses and inject confusion. Through image he highlights the beauty and complexity of natural elements and their patterns in a style reminiscent of pictorialist photography, where evocative beauty takes precedence over faithful representation of reality.

WATER 1 is Kandalaft’s second short film. His first, 33 33 33, was screened for the first time in Toronto in November 2018. Elora Weill-Engerer, art critic and member of the International Association of Art Critics AICA about 33 33 33:

“Urban spaces shaped by man and yet entirely unpopulated, by the crudity of their subject matter Marc Kandalaft’s images evoke the approach of Germany’s New Objectivity movement, which often turned its lens on uninhabited industrial spaces. Here the document subsumes the image and the scientific method seeps into the creative process to prioritize, classify, prescribe. Generic topoi, scraps of iron, brick, or clouds of vapor — apparitions that emerge only in the expressive collection of the photographer-wanderer, punctuating the real in a suspension of judgment.”
